Bedsharing Life Hack

If you've ever shared a bed with anyone, you know the struggle. I don't even need to say anything else. You know what this is about. The covers. If your bed partner, be it adult or child (God bless you), isn't a cover-hog, then it's probably you. We make jokes about it.

We have arguments about it. It's the kind of thing that can drive couples apart.

Pillows

But do we ever actually do anything about it? That's because we can't, right? Nope. We can now! I had this crazy idea after months of waking up to having nothing but sheets and just one corner of the blanket. The corner that I apparently grip so very tightly in my sleep as if it were a cookie that a toddler somehow snuck before dinner which you'd insist on taking away. So if you've ever thought about installing a night-vision camera to see who's really to blame for this cover-thievery, or better yet hiring a Loss Prevention team to stand post all night, you can now, once and for all, settle these arguments with one easy purchase. You may even have some of these lying around from back in your tripp-pants wearing days. Not personalizing at all! ;) See, because you can't really tell someone, "Hey you should stop doing that thing which I do not like." Because in this case they're dead-asleep when they do it which makes things difficult. And this Life Hack doesn't even have to be for bedsharers. Some people who live alone, especially those with silky blankets, seem to always wake up with their bed looking like a tornado went through it. It's one of those mysteries of the universe. Now, they do make something similar to this that you can buy in stores but it's only for fitted sheets. Luckily this keeps the bedcovers distributed evenly so no matter how crazy things get, it'll be equal on both sides and keep your feets nice and snug too, but not too snug. And a nice added bonus: it makes fixing the bed in the morning a breeze! Who doesn't want that? So, here's what you do. Get a pair of suspenders. The grandpa kind is best -- I see them for sale at Goodwill all the time -- because they're really big and can stretch further and the clips are better for gripping, but any kind should work. If need be, most suspenders are adjustable in case they're not long enough. There's also a right side and a wrong side of the suspenders but it honestly doesn't matter which side you put where. They're not going to be showing anyway. First, make the bed how you normally do.

Next, lift up the blanket or duvet or whatever you have as your top cover, so you can see the top sheet. At the bottom of the bed, tuck the sheet in between the mattress and the box spring starting at the bottom and then about a foot up the sides. This might be harder if you have a bed frame, but trust me, it'll be worth the trouble.

Flip the blanket back down. This photo indicates where the suspenders will be attached to the blanket underneath the mattress, between it and the box spring. About foot and a half from the bottom of the bed. That way entering and exiting the bed is still possible and safe.

Starting at the bottom of the bed at Position 1, using your fingers, roll a little bit of the blanket under to make attaching the clasps more secure. If you don't do this, the clasps won't grasp the blanket filler inside and could rip the blanket if the suspenders are pulled too hard. You can skip this step if you have something thick like a duvet or quilt.

Attach the clasp of one of the two "short ends" of the suspenders to the blanket.

Repeat so that the two short ones are spaced about a foot apart, as close and evenly to the middle of the bed as possible.

Now slide one of the "long sides" of the suspenders underneath the mattress, between it and the box spring, being careful not to mess up the top sheet tucked in there.

Stretch it until you can reach the side of the comforter about a foot and a half up the side of the bed, shown in Positions 3 and 4. Roll the blanket under again, and attach the suspender to the covers just like before. The fourth one is the trickiest, just because it may have gotten lost under the mattress in the last step. You'll just have to feel for it, but don't worry, it's in there! Slide it to the other side and repeat one last time. And voila! A spiffy bedsharing hack that's sure to put this OCD's mind at ease.
